BEGINNER/ADV BEGINNER FOUNDATIONAL or ITALIC CALLIGRAPHY CLASS

IN-DEPTH course to both learn and refine your general calligraphy basic skills, via studying and perfecting the Foundational or Italic script. This is what got me started in calligraphy, and gave a strong base for learning ANY script: Learn one script in depth, live and breathe it, get those letter shapes and the thick/thin lines just right, find the spirit of the hand, refine your observation skills, find out what to look for to correct your own mistakes, improve your fine motor skills and eye/hand coordination, and discover the rhythm of the hand which leads to consistency/harmony on the page. It’s foundational! I’ll push you to be your best, but I’m nice about it. Expect to practice a few hours each week outside of class time, 1/2 to 1 hour per day would be ideal. Practice is the ONLY way to learn calligraphy! (Taught in English, I’m also fluent in ASL.)

Where: In person at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in Putney, Vermont, USA–AND online every other week

When: TBD Duration of 12 weeks: six in person classes, six online tutorials, alternating weeks. Online small group tutoring will be set up on alternating weeks for 1-2 weekly hour sessions that accommodate students’ schedules.

Supplies needed: 1) A 2.4 mm or 3 mm Pilot parallel pen (or a similar size flat nib with holder), 2) ink, and 3) a smartphone/tablet/laptop with stand so you can live stream your calligraphy for the virtual sessions. I will have the 2.4 Pilot parallel pens for sale at cost ($9), and practice paper and guidelines.

Cost: $90/$160/$210 sliding scale. The regular rate for this class is $160, HOWEVER… Not all of our financial situations are equal. So here’s my “equalizer” solution, which has worked well in past classes: for those who are financially comfortable please consider being a sponsor for someone who is strapped and pay $160-210, and for those who are strapped for cash please pay what you can from $90-160. If $90 is too high, email me and we’ll figure it out. Calligraphy is for everyone, it should not be an elite art form. Paypal, Venmo, personal checks, and cash accepted. Paying in installments is fine.

Registration: Email me at vermontnovus@gmail.com or call/text 802-380-0186. Let me know if you wish to purchase a pen, so I know how many to have on hand. If you are a new student, include a brief description of your calligraphy experience.

I am open to teaching most broad edge pen calligraphy scripts for beginners and advanced beginners. These scripts include but are not limited to: Uncial, Rustic, Italic, Foundational, and Blackletter or Gothic. The schedule can be an intensive week, a weekly online or in person (or hybrid) class from 4-14 weeks. I greatly prefer in person sessions, especially for beginners, as it is often essential for me to watch a student practice in order to give helpful feedback about pen angle and other mechanics. Online sessions can work if the student has a way to videotape themselves practicing and send it to me.

I’m forever interested in different venues to teach, as well as available for one day workshops, individual tutoring, and small group sessions. Always reasonable rates!

ALSO UPCOMING: ONLINE IN-DEPTH BEGINNER LETTERER CLASS FOR THE REBELLIOUS Don’t care about Italic or Foundational or all those other classic styles? Want to develop your own alphabet? While I highly recommend learning at least one of the classic scripts as a training ground before you start funkifying your lettering, I recognize the trend online for many people who are just going crazy with their own versions of lettering. Alright, then! Let’s talk about the possibilities and limitations of this art. Let’s test your pen skills and refine them, learn about pen angle and when it needs to be consistent and when it can shift. Let’s play with how to create your own rules for an alphabet and see if those can be applied to all 26 letters. Let’s find ways to make the letters look like they belong together, rather than something from a five year old (no dissing of five year old’s art, but if you’re over 15 then you probably want a different effect). Let’s talk about pen options, brush options, ink and paint and paper. DETAILS: Absolutely none so far, TBD. Most likely on Teachable. Just letting you know what I’m considering so you can keep an eye out or ask questions.
